What it is
Cerebrolysin is a mixture of small peptides and amino acids obtained from porcine brain, rather than a single defined peptide. Its proposed neuroprotective biology is the reason it has been investigated in neurological conditions. This profile focuses on acute ischaemic stroke, the condition examined by the cited Cochrane review; it does not treat that evidence as a verdict on every neurological condition.[1]
Research areas and evidence
The 2023 Cochrane review included seven randomized trials involving 1,773 participants, including a trial of the related but different mixture Cortexin. The pooled mortality analysis suggested little or no difference in death from any cause, with moderate-certainty evidence. The review found important gaps: the included studies did not report the specified death-or-dependence outcome, quality of life, or return to work. A proposed mechanism is therefore not a substitute for demonstrated patient benefit.[1]
Safety and unknowns
The review found little or no difference in serious adverse events overall, but a signal for more non-fatal serious adverse events with Cerebrolysin. Several trials had unclear or high risk of bias, and manufacturer involvement was reported in some studies. These limitations matter when interpreting promotional claims about recovery or cognition. The cited stroke evidence does not establish enhancement of memory in healthy people, and this profile supplies no treatment recommendation.[1]
